Longwood House Dental Clinic > Treatments > TMJ-Bruxism Treatments

DR Ahmed has undertaken a specialized training programme with The British Society of Occlusal Studies and is qualified to treat patients suffering from the symptoms of TMJ Disorder.
Headache and dizziness may be caused by TMJ syndrome.

Migraines and Head-aches can be relieved by the treatment of TMJ Dysfunction.Dr Ahmed is able to diagnose if you have TMJ dysfunction at your initial consultation.

With TMJ Dysfunction You may feel pain every time you talk, chew, or yawn. TMJ syndrome may cause ear pain, ringing in the ears (tinnitus), and hearing loss.

Teeth grinding as a habit can result in muscle spasm and inflammatory reactions, thus causing the initial pain.
Pain in the facial muscles and jaw joints may radiate to the neck or shoulders.

The teeth themselves may present increased levels of sensitivity, wear, fractures and pain.Porcelain may chip from crowns/ bridges and teeth may become mobile or drift out of position.
Temporomandibular joint (TMJ) syndrome or TMJ

Joint disorders are medical problems related to the jaw joint. The TMJ connects the lower jaw (mandible) to the skull (temporal bone) in front of the ear. Certain facial muscles control chewing. Problems in this area can cause head and neck pain, a jaw that is locked in position or difficult to open, problems biting, and popping sounds when you bite. Al of the above symptoms can be experienced due to this problem.

Treatment for TMJ syndrome should begin when it is in early stages- you must seek advice.

In order to treat patients and relieve them of their symptoms , they must understand the cause......

When the lower jaw lines up perfectly with the upper jaw and your bite is functioning normally, everything is fine and working harmoniously. If the lower jaw does not line up properly, or, perhaps more importantly, if there is abnormal stress present when the lower jaw contacts the upper jaw, problems can occur. The abnormal stress is usually clenching or grinding of the teeth and it can occur any time, day or night, awake or asleep. When this happens, a person can develop regular, chronic, or migraine headaches; muscle pain or tenderness in the jaw joint muscles;etc.

The Treatment

Patients with temporomandibular joint problems don't have to face jaw pain, migraines and trouble sleeping any longer. Dr.Ahmed will first need to thoroughly evaluate your TMJ problem and identify the cause. Most patients benefit from device therapy, using one or multiple devices worn at night to alleviate symptoms from an uneven bite.

This appliance fits over your upper or lower teeth, much like a mouth guard in sports. The splint can help reduce clenching and teeth grinding, especially if worn at night. This will ease muscle tension. You should be completely free of any pain and it will protect your natural teeth from wear, existing fillings from fracture.

If a patient's teeth don't fit and slide together in harmony, one or more of these muscle groups may begin to suffer from fatigue. This may be felt as headaches, eye pain, shoulder pain - or pain from any of the muscle groups described above. Stress levels are known to make matters worse. Patient's under pressure at work, at home or in their personal lives are more likely to suffer from these problems as are those who have recently changed job, had a death in the family, moved house, divorced or been put into a job that they cannot cope with. We also know that each individual can cope with some bite errors without getting symptoms at all. These patients are living within their own limitations without problems. Adding a certain amount of stress to those patients lives, damaging any of the supporting muscles as in a car accident or adding new errors such as a dental crown which does not fit properly, can push these patients from having no problems at all to having lots of problems.
This treatment involves removing the interferences which cause your teeth to meet in an imperfect manner and thus reduces the trigger for bruxism or grinding and clenching. This must be done in a controlled fasion in order to be effective in relieving symptoms.

Only about 1% of patients require joint surgery and Dr Ahmed is able to diagnose those problems that will benefit from surgery.
