The Risk Factors Of Teeth Grinding, Explained

Mar 05, 2020

Teeth grinding is more common than you may think, as it’s believed to affect up to 30 percent of the general population. If untreated, this habit can be very harmful to oral health, causing a variety of problems ranging from broken fillings and teeth, gum inflammation to loose teeth.
Another problem is that teeth grinding (also known as bruxism) can go unnoticed. Some people may develop this habit and be unaware of it since bruxism often happens when we’re asleep.
So how can you find out if you’re affected by it? There are certain factors that increase the risk of developing this habit.
Key takeaways:
- Having a misaligned or improper bite is a common risk factor. People with overbite, underbite, or crossbite problems are more likely to clench their teeth.
- Sleep apnea and frequent snoring can increase the chances of suffering from bruxism. In fact, any sleep disorders are a risk factor for this condition.
- If you suffer from frequent headaches, neck aches and back aches ( even lower back pain) - this is a strong indicator that you are grinding your teeth at night.
- Stress is another leading cause of bruxism, and it’s also connected to sleep disorders.
Jaw pain and tooth sensitivity can be warning symptoms of bruxism.
To be on the safe side, ask your dentist for a check-up, or referral to a TMJ dentist: especially if you have any of the risk factors described above.
At Longwood Dental Care we have Dentists that can diagnose and treat this problem. The best method is to have a Sci bite appliance made: this is different from any other mouth appliance - Sci - Sleep Clench Inhibitor is the most clinically effective FDA-approved treatment for TMD, bruxism, and medically diagnosed headaches. It works to reduce the tensing of jaw muscles and the risk of damage to your teeth.and is proven to decrease the symptoms and pain.
Laser therapy has also helped relieve muscle and jaw pain in severe cases.
