What To Do About An Uneven Gumline

Feb 28, 2020

Our gums don’t only play a key role supporting our teeth, but they are also important when it comes to the overall look of our smile.
If you smile and your gums show, then this is why having an uneven gumline may make you self-conscious and make your teeth look crooked and uneven.
Usually, an uneven gumline is the result of two things: either too much or too little gum tissue.
Excessive gum tissue can make the teeth look smaller, whereas not having enough gum tissue can expose your teeth unnecessarily and make them look longer.
If you are in any of these two situations, you should know that an uneven gumline can be corrected. The first step is to have your dentist assess the cause.
For example, you may have a gummy smile (too much gum tissue). In this case, your gumline can be restored using dental lasers. The excess gum can gently be removed painlessly, with little or no discomfort afterwards.
A surgical procedure known as gum contouring can help. This is done under local anaesthesia and recovery time goes from a few days to a few weeks. In some cases, your gumline may be uneven due to harsh brushing or gum disease. Whatever the cause, your dentist will be able to advice you on the cause and then offer a personalised solution.
Dr. Ioannis and Dr. Ahmed at Longwood House Dental, have a huge amount if experience in correction of uneven gums.
